Lathe - How to Restore and Get It Running - 3-Phase Motor by Dave Wirth
I was lucky enough to get an old Powermatic 90 lathe for free. Something i never thought i would own, or if i did, would have to pay $1,000 for. This was built in 1962 but still works and runs great. The biggest challenge was figuring out the 3-phase motor. I have never had to deal with a 3-phase motor before, but finally i was able to get it running on ordinary single-phase electricity. I tested it with a single-phase motor and my own wooden pulleys before figuring out that i could start the original motor with a capacitor. Lots of parts were rusted and broken and some welding was needed. But i'm looking forward to projects like bowls and things. I still have to make a chuck for holding the bowl to gouge out the inside, but that will be for another day.
